LIFT ’01 presented companies from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Palestine, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Uganda, the UK and the USA. The Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio production ‘Buchettino’ was performed to an audience tucked into bunk beds, and inspired both ‘Stones in My Boots’, a residency by choreographer Madalena Victorino and photographer Agnès Desfosses with a group of primary school children; and ‘Into the Woods’, a conference on childhood, creativity and censorship. After the 2001 festival, LIFT decided to break with the traditional biennial festival format and embarked on a new venture – the LIFT Enquiry. Over a five year period LIFT set a challenge to itself and the international theatre field: What new directions exist for theatre in Britain and around the world? How might a new format for festivals work? Does theatre matter? The LIFT Enquiry is not yet archived.
